Chris Newman’s strange parlour music makes me happy

Chris Newman’s weird parlour songs first came to via a friend at York University during postgraduate study. At first they didn’t read to me; I expected an amount of seriousness in my music. Newman was silly, abject, obtuse…and yet the piano was so perfect and sweet, the voice so gravelly and amazing. Soon I loved it. Of course then I discovered that Newman also writes music that “sounds” serious too. The end result is a kind of unknowing of the music. What is it? Is it silly or not? Things can be more than one thing.
